Enceladus

Interactive globe of the strongest ocean-world candidate in the catalog. The base is the Cassini ISS global mosaic at 110 m/px. At the south pole, four parallel fractures — Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo and Alexandria Sulci, the tiger stripes — vent over a hundred jets of water-ice, salts and organics from a global subsurface ocean into a plume that feeds Saturn's E ring. Cassini flew through it repeatedly: the measured chemistry includes molecular hydrogen and phosphates, the ingredients of chemical energy for life. A body 500 km across should be geologically dead; Enceladus is the most active icy world known, and the reason 'ocean worlds' is now a NASA program line.

Methodology

Construction

The sphere is rendered in Three.js at Enceladus's mean radius, 252.1 km, scaled to scene units with the measured flattening applied. The base map is the Cassini ISS global mosaic at 110 m/px — for a body this small, proportionally the sharpest global cartography in the Worlds catalog. The product is greyscale; a slight uniform tint at the near-neutral colour of pure water ice is applied. Enceladus's Bond albedo (~0.81) is the highest of any solar-system body, which is itself a plume measurement: the surface is continually refreshed with ice fallback.

The south polar terrain

The four tiger stripes — Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo and Alexandria Sulci, ~130 km long, ~35 K warmer than their surroundings at the vents — are drawn at the south pole with the plume jets' source fractures selectable. Cassini's INMS and CDA instruments, flying through the plume, measured H₂O with NaCl, CO₂, CH₄, NH₃, molecular hydrogen (the signature of active water–rock chemistry at the seafloor) and, in the E-ring grains, phosphates. The rest of the moon divides into old cratered plains in the north and the tectonised Sarandib and Diyar Planitiae — the record of earlier active episodes.

Rotation and research feed

Enceladus is synchronous at 1.370 days; its measured forced libration is the geodetic proof that the ice shell is decoupled from the core by a global ocean. The research panel queries body_server.py at /api/enceladus/latest; absent a server, the seed research.json and ADS search links are used. The engine, server and data schema are shared with the other Worlds globes.
