How to read the atlas
Time runs left → right (1500 → 2030, linear, 50-year ticks). Vertical rows are Jesuit institutions — ten of them — plus a bottom row for the political and institutional events that shaped the working astronomy. Each glyph sits at its event's date on its institution's row. Bars are figures: a horizontal bar shows the years that figure was actively working at that institution. Every bar carries a small portrait cameo at its left edge and the SJ badge so you can read who-and-when at a glance — every working astronomer on this atlas is a member of the Society of Jesus.
The 1773 → 1814 vertical gray band marks the 41-year suppression of the Society of Jesus by Pope Clement XIV under Bourbon political pressure. It is part of the story. The Beijing observatory limped on under ex-Jesuits absorbed by the Lazarists; the Roman College lost continuity; the Society was restored by Pius VII in 1814 and the colleges and observatories were rebuilt from a near-zero base over the next half-century.
Glyph shape is the kind of contribution: filled circle = discovery or observation, open circle = publication or treatise, square = founding of an institution, triangle = instrument or technique, diamond = political or institutional event. Glyph fill colour matches the institutional stripe.
The institutions, briefly
g.The friction, named
This is an honest record. The page does not skip over the institutional and political events that shaped — and at times stopped — Jesuit astronomy. They appear on the bottom stripe of the stage, and the relevant entries above are tagged with red friction notes in their detail cards. The major ones: the 1616 admonition to Galileo (delivered by Cardinal Bellarmine, a Jesuit theologian); the 1633 trial and condemnation; the 1664–65 imprisonment of Adam Schall in Beijing under Yang Guangxian's denunciation; the 1773 Suppression of the Society by Clement XIV under Bourbon political pressure; the loss of the Roman College after Italian unification in 1870; and the 1992 papal statement on the Galileo case under John Paul II. None of these reduce the standing of the working astronomy on this page. They are the conditions under which it was done.
Methodology — what counts, what does not
Inclusion. An entry qualifies if (a) the principal investigator was a member of the Society of Jesus or a Catholic cleric working in a clerical capacity at the time of the work, and (b) the result was a primary contribution to astronomy or its instrumentation, calendar reform, or institutional infrastructure. Suppressed-era ex-Jesuits (1773–1814) who continued working through Lazarist or other Catholic structures are noted in the relevant entries but not given separate stripe rows.
Exclusion. Non-Jesuit Catholic clerics doing astronomy (Bacon the Franciscan, Cusa the cardinal, Copernicus the canon, Mersenne the Minim friar, Gassendi the provost of Digne, Lemaître the diocesan priest of Mechelen) are not on this atlas. They were the upstream and adjacent Catholic intellectual tradition, and earlier drafts of this volume included them as a parallel context stripe, but this volume is now restricted to the Society of Jesus's institutional thread. Jesuits doing non-astronomical work (Teilhard's paleontology, Suárez's metaphysics, Bellarmine's theology proper) are not on this atlas. Bellarmine appears only on the political stripe for his 1616 role in the Galileo case, which is unavoidable. Modern non-clerical astronomers at the Vatican Observatory (Ileana Chinnici and other lay collaborators) are credited on the institutional cards but the named-entry glyphs are reserved for the principal Jesuit contributors.
Primary sources. Every entry's deep-dive card includes a quoted excerpt or precise paraphrase from a primary source (treatise, mission report, papal motu proprio, modern peer-reviewed paper), with citation and where available a stable URL to a digitized scan or DOI. The references section at the bottom collects the master list. If you find an error in an entry, the citation is the place to start — that is the working astronomer's quarrel-with-the-page protocol.
Confidence and friction. Where a date or attribution is contested in the historiography, the deep-dive card says so. Examples: the dating of Boscovich's first sustained heliocentric defense (which had to navigate the post-1633 environment carefully); the question of whether Ricci personally taught the Almagest at Beijing or simply imported the texts; the priority dispute between Scheiner and Galileo over sunspots. The page does not pretend these are settled.

The Roman College's Angelo Secchi sits at the head of the stellar-spectroscopy lineage that the RAVEN Archives Atlas traces forward through Harvard, Mount Wilson, IUE, IRAS, 2MASS, WISE, and SPHEREx. Riccioli and Grimaldi's lunar nomenclature still labels the craters on the IAU base maps used in the RAVEN Lunar Database Explorer. Maximilian Hell's 1769 Venus transit observation from Vardø — and the broader Jesuit contribution to the 1761 and 1769 Venus-transit campaigns — is one of the historical anchors for the modern transit-photometry program in the RAVEN Explorers series. Boscovich's geodetic Rome–Rimini meridian arc (1750–52, with Christopher Maire) and Verbiest's Beijing bronze instruments (1673) are referenced in the RAVEN Platforms Atlas for ground-based instrumentation.
